CHRISTCHUROH 14th August. The Matatua sailed during the week for South America with 6700 sacks of potatoes. The . shipment is the fourth this year to Montevideo, and it is the final one. The total quantity sent approximates 1500 tons. Though the market for potatoes is quiet, there is no decline in prices. The undug crop cannot j be taken into estimation to a very great extent since the last two rains in providing supplies from now on, and grow- | ora are not inclined to open their pits I unless at a substantial advance. A few ' small lots have been bought during the week at £5 10s per ton on trucks. Shipments north this week have been nil, | and the -Kaituna's small cargo of 3050 | sacks a week ago and theunlikelihood of the Kaiapoi, which is booked to saiJ on Monday, taking many should clear the decks in the north. Sydney quotations are coming to hand on a basis of lip to £8 f.0.b.5.i., Lyttelton. The Koromiko is to sail direct to-day or tomorrow with about 5000 sacks, and the Waikouaiti is taking some from Timaru. Oats are dull to the point of lifeless j ness. Southern offers of a week ago j have not been maintained. A disap j pointing bulk of oats are going into"coii' ! sumption, and there is little, in the outlook of an encouraging nature to holders. Quotations are 4s 2d, f.o.b.s:i., for A's and 3s lOd for B's. Partridge peas are firm, the Home position being steady, but export grade ,in farmers' hands is in small compass Up to 5s 9d on trucks is being offered for this quality. The fowl wheat market is quiet, 'quotations being quiet at 6s lid, f.0.h., ex sacks. The seed market has been more or less in a state of suspension during the week. Values are unaltered.
