. Maoris displayed considerable interest at Court to-day when Whavekuva Timoti proceeded against H. M. Downs,, manager of, the Eatana Bank. Downs was charged that on 10th July, 1924. by false pretences, to wit, a statement that the informant was entitled to receive £80 from the Ratana Bank in return for an investment of £5, he procured the £5 Timoti delivered to Downs as representing the bank. Informant stated ho deposited £5 with Downs, and the secretary of the bank, and- received 80 coupons which indicated they were worth £1 cash, ,11c was told if he paid in £5 he would receive a loan of £80. He made two applications for the loan, lint without success. On the first occasion he was told there was no money in the bank, and on the second Downs told him the coupons were not worth £1. The case is proceeding.
