OUT ON STRIKE
MEN AT ARAPUNI TUNNEL WORK,
(BI MLEOBAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION)
AUCKLAND, This Bay. Men working on the tunnel at Arapuni came out on strike on Friday morning. This work, which is one'of the most important being undertaken at the moment, has for its object the diverting of tire Waikato River so that the foundations of a dam may be built. The work had been reorganised in a satisfactory manner in this section quite recently, floods having interrupted operations, and the men were working in shifts of six and a half hours. They had been earning £2 8s each per shift. It is stated that.following a sudden decrease in the output of spoil from the tunnel, negotiations were commenced, and though the men's leaders received proposals favourably, a strike was declared.
So far no settlement has been made.
