ROAD TO SUCCESS

NEED FOR HARD WORK

PRIME MINISTER ON INCREASED

PRODUCTION,

The need for hard work in the community was stressed by the Prime Minister (the Hon. J. (2. Coates), speaking at Eketahuna on Saturday.

Mr. Coates said he hoped the vision of the Government would attract round it all those people who desired to see this country great and progressive, and that it would bring together all the best interests in the Dominion, In the initial stages there were burdens to carry, including those which we incurred during tha dire necessity of helping the Mother Country in the war. Those had to be paid off, and they could only be paid off by means of sound administration. It waß not possible to pay them off with paper. As with private enterprise, so with the State. Everything had to be paid for. "You may stave off the day of payment for a time," he said, "but things have to be paid for some day, and to pay for them you must have sound management. Let us carry on development by all means, but in addition to that we must make the country attractive i£ we are going to get the people into this country. It is essential for everybody in New • Zealand if he has money working to make it work hard. It means also work on the part of the citizens, because no nation is really happy unless its people are working. There i's no royal road to success except the road of hard work. We have to relieve the country of its load,_ md to do that we ask everybody to give a good return for the money they receive. The way to do that is to increase production. I believe that in all Government Departments, for instance, there should be every care and economy. By economy I do not mean pinching here and pinching there, but giving the best service without" waste of any kind. That can only be done by the goodwill of the men controlling those Departments, and they will quickly find that the men and women under them will take their cue from them. Nothrsg is perfect, and it requires the efforts of everybody—not only the Government in power, the heads of State Departments, and members of Parliament, but every citizen. It means that there must be the distinct will of everybody to good Bervice, and full value, for what they receive in return: When you have the country well managed then you can give the people the benefit of that good management. I hope that while l.am a member o£ the Government, and particularly as Prime Minister, the Government will always be found giving equal opportunity to all sections of the community. We cannot afford to favour the few. That is quite against the attitude the Government has always taken up."
