CHESS
THE WELLINGTON CLUB
After a break of four weeks, play for the championship of the Wellington Chess Club was resumed on. Saturday evening, when wins were scored by Messrs. D. Wild and F. K. Kelling. The fixture H. Godtschalk v. W. J. Fairburn was drawn, and four other games are marked incomplete. A. W. Gyles appears to have the better prospects against G. Wigljam, as the latter has not got sufficient compensation for the gambit pawn given up. The games E. A. Hicks v. G. P. Anderson, E. S. Taylor v. T. Fouhy, and W. E. Mason v. E. E. Hicks are being splendidly contested, and are about as. even, as they could possibly be. The best, scores to date are:—A. W. Gyles, 6, wins, no losses; G. P. Anderson, s'-, 4; G. Wigham, 54, 14; W. E. Mason, 4i, 14; E. A. Hicks, 3, 2; S. Faulknor, 4, 2; F. K. Kelling, 54, 24; J. W. Simpson, 34, 24; H- Godtschalk, 34, 34; and E. E. Hicks, 3, 3.
Messrs. J. A. C. Barnes (second eon of the. well-known ex-champion, of. New Zealand), H. J. Thompson, and Gyles, sen., are leading in-the club's "Intermediate" tourney, these three competitors being unbeaten to date. Messrs. W. R. Bock and W. A. Dorribusch are leading in the junior contest, closely followed by Messrs.-E. J. Browne, W. H. White, W. Toomath, and A. P. Clapsliaw. The club"s annual handicap, or "Petherick," contest has lost none of its old-time popularity; Three of the competitors are still undefeated, viz., F. Grady (44, £), E. S. Taylor (2£, £), and G. P. Anderson (24, £). The next best tallies are:—J. A. G. Barnes, 4, 1; J. W. Simpson, 34, 14; N. Doneghue, 4, 2; L. K. Doherty, 34, 24; and A. L. Lawson, 3, 3.
THE NGAIO CLUB.
The Nfcaio Chess Club's championship tourney for 1924-25 resulted in" a tie for first place between Messrs. J. Lindsny (winner of the three previous similar tourneys) and G. A. Jones (formerly champion of the Masterton C.C., arid now a resident of Johnsonville). The play-off game stands adjourned in a very even state. The members of this club aro looking forward to next Saturday's annual match against the representatives of the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute. The .score at the first six boards is to count for the 'senior teams' competition of the Wellington Chess League, and the scores at the next six boards (7 to 12 inclusive) count for the league's junior teams' competition.
