DESTROYERS TO CALL

VARIOUS ARRANGEMENTS,

Of the 7500 officers and men of the American fleet, 2700 or so will be upon the' three ships, Seattle, Pennsylvania, and Richmond, at the Pipitea Wharf, 300, and the nursing staff, on the Relief at Clyde Quay Wharf, and 4000 on ships lying in the stream. The fourteen destroyers which are going to Lytteltcn and the fourteen to Dunedin are also to call at Wellington for the last two days of tho stay of the larger ships. . ■ ■ j THE LUNCH-HOUR WELCOME. ; In Bpite of the opposition which has been manifested in respect to the proposal to extend the lunch hour on the day of the arrival of the fleet, the Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood) has issued a general invitation to employers in the j city to allow their employees as much j freedom as possible to facilitate their participation in the welcome to the visitors from overseas. Mr. Norwood said that for obvious reasons he did not wish to call a holiday, but expected that a great number of employees would be at least able to witness the arrival of the United States j battleships. Throughout the duration of the visit, also, he expected business men to enter into the spirit of the welcome and give their hands every possible opportunity of making the reception a spectacular one. It is not proposed to take any action as to the proposal that school children should Hue the foreshore on Tuesday, but the following Monday, when the Navy League's junior members, 3500 in number, will make a day of it, will be a big occasion for the youngsters. TRIPS ON PERRY STEAMEES. Special arrangements have been made ' by the Eastbourne ferry service in connection with the arrival of the American fleet. Subject to the present official programme being maintained the Muritai will leave the Ferry Wharf for. the Heads at 11.15 a.m., and will steam up the harbour with tho fleet, arriving back at the wharf about 1 o'clock. There will he excursions round the fleet during the afternoon,' at 1.15 p.m. and 2.30 p.m., arriving back about 2 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. respectively, while there will be two evening trips with the first boat leaving at 7.30 p.m. SOCCER MATCH. The Wellington Football Association have received word that amongst the athletes coming- with the American fleet is a first-class Soccer team. • They are now endeavouring to promote a match between a local side and the visitors at the Basin Reserve on Saturday next, and present indications are that the game will be one of the features of the stay of the warships in this port.
