VISIT OF AMERICAN FLEET.

The monthly meeting of tho Eautbourne Borough Council was held lost evening under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr. H. M. Jonea), the following also being present:—Councillors .T. F. Laing, R. O. Holmes, H. Black, 0. H. Andrew, S. H. Jenkins, and H. J. Levy.

The Mayor congratulated the Works Committee and the borough staff in regard to the work done in giving relief in various parts of the borough which had been flooded out during the recent heavy rains. The work carried out by councillors had alleviated a great deal of the trouble.

Discussing the visit of the American Fleet to Wellington, the Eastbourne Borough Council decided last evening that they unable to make a donation to the Citizens' Entertainment Fund, but that they would place the recreation ground at tho disposal of the men and also three tennis courts, all free of cost to men in uniform: The'council also decided that men in uniform would be carried on the, ferry fleet at one shilling per head.

The council decided to ask the Wellington City Council to place .Waterloo quay in better order than it is ,at present between Customhouse Building and the railway line, especially in regard to crossings.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Baker for the donation of a large number of kowhai trees. for planting on the road-sides and borough reserves. Bm'ldin-' permits for June included two dwellines and a combined dwelling and shop, the whole totalling £2875, for which the fees amounted to £8 10s.
