A NARROW ESCAPE
OtL FREIGHTER GOES ASHORE

.. : AUCKLAND, This Day. A narrow escape from being totally wrecked befell the Danish steamer Sierra Morena, now at Auckland, when she was proceeding from Boston to Norfolk for bunkers before loading her present cargo. In a thick fog in the early hours of sth May the vessel ran ashore on the beach about 300 yards from Cape Henry lighthouse, at the entrance to Norfolk Harbour. Fortunately, the beach was sand. Boisterous weather followed, and for three days heavy : seas prevented any salvage work being done. In the meantime a salvage tug had arrived from New York.- The. Sierra Morena floated into deep water on 13th May and then was towed to Newport News, where it was found that in addition to consider-able-damage to the lower part of the hull, her sternpost was twisted and propeller blades broken. The engine also had sustained damage by the sarid that had been taken in through the circulating pumps. Repair work, occupied 36 days before the Sierra Morena was able to resume her voyage to Texas to load for New Zealand and Australia.
