lhe third annual meeting of the Royal xvew Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children (Lower Hutt branch) was held on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mr. \y. T. Strand (Mayor). The report and balance-sheet, which were considered satisfactory, were adopted. Speaking to the adoption of the report, Mr. E. W. Hunt said that the society noted with great satisfaction that Dr. Truby King had been knighted rhe 8440 visits ■ paid by the nurse snowed the importance of the work being carried on. The fact that the annual fete had not been held made it necessary that a special effort should be made to recover the £71, which sum the society had. gone back during the year. Mr. G. A. Chapman was deserving the special thanks of the society for the work he had accomplished in the grounds round the society's rooms. Mr. Adrian Treadwell moved a special vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, the members ;of which had not spared time nor effort on behalf of the society.

It was moved by Mrs. Gf. A. Chapman and seconded by Mrs. T. W. Strand, that a honorarium of £10 10s be voted to Mrs. Hoggard in appreciation of her services as secretary. Dr. J. S. "Elliott, of Wellington " spoke of the history of the society from its small beginnings, when it first met in Government House under Lady Plunket Sir Truby King had proved a great organiser,' and to-day the movement had developed from a New Zealand movement to one of world-wide importance The society's "booklet, first published in INew Zealand, was now published in several foreign languages. The" society was needed more than ever to-day, because of the decreasing birth-rate. Dr. Elliott _ spoke strongly on the appalling conditions under which some people lived in the cities, and strongly urged all present to take a great interest in the housing question. ■ The chairman spoke on the efforts which were being put forward in Lowei Hutt to meet modern needs in townplanning. • ■ Votes of thanks were accorded to the Mayor and Borough Council, the speakers of the evening (who, besides those already mentioned, included the E-evs. M'Caw and Itowe, and Messrs. S Clendon and J. Mitchell), the treasurer, Mrs. J. M'Caw, the nurse (Miss Fanning), the hon. solicitor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and the Press.

A vote of thanks to Mr. _W. T. Strand ior presidm<r concluded the business, and those present were then entertained at supper by the ladies. ■ ""
