AN INTRODUCTION NECESSARY.
It is frequently observed that etiquette is not what it used to be. There is the story, that Harriet Martineau used to rolato. One day in an hotel she and several friends wore talking by the fire, when she suddenly discovered that the dress of one of the women was alight. Commotion ensued, and happily tho burning garment was extinguished. Thereupon a polite old lady sitting opposite remarked with tho utmost self-complacency: "I had observed for some time that that lady's dross was burning; but as I had not the honour o£ an introduction to her, I did not like to mention it!" ■ .
