PARAMOUNT THEATRE.

A mid-ocean battle with a ninety-ton whale is only one of the many thrilling features of "Down to the Sea in Ships/ the Hodgkinson super-special production which heads the new programme at the Paramount Theatre. The story of the film tells of the orphaned grand-daugh-ter of a stern old Quaker, who rebels against his tyranny in Bonding her sweetheart away on a whaling cruise. She dons a sailor's suit and stows away on the vessel, remaining in hiding until she is discovered. Shoals of porpoises are shown right* in front of the camera's eye, and sharks, big grey tigers of the deep, can bo seen tearing at the body of a dead whale. The time' of this story is in the days of the wind-jammers, when there were no speed launches in which the whalers could chase their | quarry." The. frail boat comes within harpooning distance of the monster, and the strong arm of the man at the bow sends the steel shaft home. Then follows a great battle, and the little boat is dragged for miles behind the enraged leviathan. Tormented by the wound, the whale suddenly turns and _ charges the. boat, immediately capsizing the craft. A speedy rescue, however, is effected by the other boats which have come up from the mother ship, and eventually' the whale is dragged back to the sailer. The whole picture is most realistic, a triumph of film production, and in addition it embraces one of the most appealing love stories ever revealed on the screen. The supporting programme, including a comedy and the latest Gazette, are remarkably good, and specially selected musical numbers arc played 'by the Paramount Orchestra. This splendid programme will bo repeated nightly throughout the week.
