HIS NEIGHBOUR'S SHEEP
FARMER CHARGED WITH THEFT. (BT TELEGRAPH.—I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, This -Day. At the Magistrate's Court to-day " before Mr. E. C. Levy, S.M.. a sheep tanner in the llangaroa district named Alfred James M'Gregor was charged with stealing, on 12th May. thirty-five sheep valued at £45, the property of J. R Murphy, and on 15th February twelve sheep valued at £12, the property of A. J. Jackman. Murphy and the accused are neighbours. It was slated in evidence that at- a muster at the accused's I place, twenty-six wethers were found | which were the property of Murphy and bore his mark, and also the accused's mark. In regard to Jackman's sheep, the accused said that when lie was at M'Laui-in's place looking for stragglers there were fourteen of Jackman's 'sheep there. Jackman used to be a neighbour, but had left the district. M'Laurin said that Jackman's sheep were a. nuisance, so the accused took them, and after a week or two put his earmark on the sheep and made a note in his diary, intending to inform Jackman and pay him when they met. The accused pleaded not guilty, and. was committed for trial, on bail.
