TARANAKI ROADS

ARE THEY SUITABLE HERE?

■>A COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE.

A proposal was made at yesterday afternoon's meeting of the local Highways Board by Mr. W. T. Strand that an investigation should be made by a committee appointed from the board into the construction of Taranaki roads that there might be an answer to the question: Are we right or are they right? Taranaki was continuing to lay miles and miles of cheaper roads, - and those roads were apparently carrying traffic perfectly. If it was found that such roads would be suitable for certain Wellington district roads the same staff and the same plant could be used to lay them, both in the city and in the suburban districts.

Councillor H. D. Bennett agreed that the step would be a wise one. It would be probable that there would be a very considerable surplus in the future, and he considered that an investigation into the possibility of paving less important roads, two or three miles for the cost now spent upon one mile, was altogether advisable.

."Nothing but good could come of the investigation," said the Mayor (Mr. 0. B. Norwood). The basic principle of road-making was that the road must outlive tho loan, and the question was: What surface could be laid to be most economical within that essential qualification? The Taranaki roads .in parts, it appeared to him, required a good deal of repair.

It was agreed that the committee of investigation should comprise Messrs. H. D. Bennett, W. H. Bennett, A. I. Mackay, and W. T. Strand, together with representatives of the engineering offices of the city and suburban bodies.
