COLD AND CHANGEABLE
The passing of the storm has given place to anti-cyclonic conditions, and during the past twenty-four hours the weather has been fair, though cold. There is, however, an element -which gives rise to some doubt as to prospects for the next few days. The ActingDirector of the Meteorological Office (Mr. B. V. Pemberton) stated to-day tnat a depression to the north-east of East Cape had apparently persisted since Sunday, and had? been'responsible for cloudy skies in the East Coast districts, with some scattered rainfall on the East Coast of the North Island. The highest barometric reading this morning— 30.39 in—was at Ohristdiurch, and the lowest—3o.o4—at East Cape. The local reading was 30.34. Moderate to strong southerly winds had prevailed northward of Weslport and Hokitika and light and variable breezes southwards. Some hard frosts occurred last night in the South Island. Indications lire for strong southerly winds, backing to easterlies and then increasing, north of. New Plymouth and Napier, strong sonth-east-crlies thence to West-port and Hokitika, and moderate to strong northerly to easterly winds elsewhere. Cold and chanseable weather is forecasted generally, with rain in the east coast districts of the North Island, and there are indications for an unfavourable change to follow within .the next few days.
