THE MARINE DRIVE

Having been opened temporarily, it is to be hoped that the Point Halswell road will not again be closed to the general public. In the past few days many hundreds of people have discovered what a beautiful link this road is in the chain of Wellington's marine drive, and they naturally desire to see it open for general use. The present position is that the Government is responsible for a section of the road, and can close it if it desires to do so; but an offer has been made to transfer authority and responsibility to the .City Council. Upon the terms of the transfer there has been some difference of opinion, but it should not be difficult now to reach an agreement. The Government, we feel sure, will be prepared to acknowledge the advantage received from better road access to its reserves upon the peninsula, and the City will recognise that, as custodian of the resting-place of the late Prime Minister, it has a duty to keep the road open for citizens and visitors who wish to pay a pilgrimage to the site. Apart from that, the ' City should remember, that in its marine drive it has a scenic asset equal to anything of the kind in the world.^ In his world-tour the late City Engineer saw nothing better, and he returned to Wellington to advise citizens that the best beautifying scheme they could adopt would be simply the extension and improvement of the harbour and sea-coast roads.
