HORTICULTURE
THE BROOKLYN SOCIETY.
The progress of the society during the past year, states the annual report of the Brooklyn Horticultural Society, to be presented to members this .evening at Waldie's Hall, compared favourably with previous efforts; a considerable improvement would be noticed. The summer show proved quite a success from an horticultural point of view, the exhibits in the major classes being of excellent standard. The gladiola section was one of the leading, features. In the vegetable section much more competition was in evidence than hitherto. Owing to the lateness of chrysanthemum blooms, the time set down for the autumn show was regrettably on the early side, and prevented to some extent a bigger number of entries. The noticeable feature was the absence .of the Lower Hutfc growers, but despite this the exhibits in the chrysanthemum classes were of excellent standard.
Reference was made'in tho previous year's report that ihe Home Industries section was lacking the assistance of the ladies. It. was pleasing to observe that considerable improvement was in evidence at both summer and autumn shows. The exhibits were of a very high standard, the judge remarking that it was very difficult to make awards.
It was with' a certain amount of pride that ths executiro recorded that the Brooklyn Society bad proved the winners of the Rose Joseph Cup. Members who came forward and assisted were to be congratulated on the result achieved.
The balance-sheet showed a cash credit of £25 3s 4d, the cash and assets being £60 17s lOd.
Thanks aro expressed by the executive to all who assisted the society during the year.
