STORM ABATES

IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER

TRAINS RUNNING LATE

BRIDGE DAMAGED NEAR

SHANNON.

The storm which has been experienced in New Zealand, especially in the North Island, during the past few days has abated, and there has been an improvement in weather conditions in all parte of the country.

Although atmospheric pressure has increased steadily everywhere, a relatively low pressure off the east coast of the North Island was responsible for a continuance of cold, wet weather on Sunday in the East Coast districts and about Cook Strait. Since then the conditions have improved in most parts of the country. Southerly winds have ruled, and have been strong and squally at times in and' northward of Cook Strait. Local rainfall yesterday was 0.36 inches. The indications are for fair to cloudy weather generally, but cold and changeable conditions, with scattered showers, may be expected in the East Coast districts, between East Cape and Kaikoura. Another very cold night is likely everywhere. Moderate to strong south and south-easterly winds are probable northward of Westport and Kaikoura, and variable winds, with northerlies prevailing soon, elsewhere. A small bridge, situated two miles north of Shannon, was scoured out this morning, and as a result trains running on the Manawatu line have been disorganised. It has been ■ necessary to transfer passengers from one train to the other. The "Limited" express from Auckland, which usually reaches Wellington at 9.31 o'clock, is not expected until 4 o'clock this afternoon, and tho ordinary Main Trunk express, a*nd tlu> Napier and New Plymouth trains, will also run late, although it is not yet known what time they will reach Wellington. The damage to the bridga which is causing all the delay will probably be repaired by to-night, and. all services will be running smoothly tomorrow.
