OFFICIAL MESSAGES

PARTY MAY STAY FOR DAYS.

LONDON, 23rd May. A certain amount of anxiety naturally prevails in London in view of the fact that the report of Amundsen's success has remained unconfirmed. The following, however, received at 2 o'clock this morning, makes the position clear. Further news is eagerly awaited. A wireless message from the Fram, at Danes Island, on Friday afternpon, states: If all went well Captain Amundsen and party should have landed at the Pole between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning,- when they would make observations and naturally rest before returning. We reckon the return journey will occupy ten or twelve hours. On the other hand, their stay might be prolonged for several days, especially if bad weather or fog was encountered. Captain Amundsen previously said he preferred to wait, rather than risk separation of the machines." Reports from Greenland, Siberia and Russia show that bad weather is brewing, but the conditions over the Polar basm are still stable, and there is no prospect of a change during the next twelve hours. Everybody here is intensely excited.

A wireless message from Spitzborgen sap: Th o Fnun and the.Hobby have set out towards Danes Island. There arc no signs so far of any mishap to the aeroplanes. The weather was still most favourable on Friday morning. We consider that if all has gone well to the north, the aeroplanes .have found a landing place at the Pole, otherwise they wuuld have roturned before now "
