The United States, from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic. Coast, has sweltered under the first heat wave of 1925. Numerous cases of prostration are reported, principally in the MiiTdlo West, and there were two deaths at Nebraska. The temperature reached 94 degrees at Washington, - which is the hottest at this date fur fifty-six years. The thermometer rose 28 degrees in twenty minutes in that city, and 40 degrees in four hours in Milwaukee. There have been unusually heavy rainstorms in Minnesota and North Dakota. The tempteraturc 1 reached 87 degrees in New York, which is the hottest since 1902. A curious phenomenon was observed at Rochester, New York. Shortly' after daylight a heavy cloud obscured the sun, suddenly turning day into niaht. Simultaneously the waters of Lak» ""Ontario receded 40 to 100 feet, and later returned to far above the ordinary water line.
lemfic winds in Minnesota uprooted trees, overturned buildings and freight ears, and wrecked communication facilities. Chicago and other localities report that all seasonal heat records have been broken.
