HUTT DEFEAT SELWYN.
Hutt scored their first win of the season on Saturday by defeating Selwyn by 9 points to nil. The town men were not in the same class as their fast-mov-ing opponents, and, although they did their best to make a game of it, they were rarely very much in the picture. The ground after the heavy rain was in a muddy state, and the players experienced great difficulty in handling the greasy ball. ■ The game therefore was mainly contested by the forwards. Early in the game Cudby kicked a goal from a penalty for Hutt, and a little later he repeated this performance, making the scores : Hutt 6, Selwyn 0. Play in the second spell was of a very ragged nature, and, though Hutt always held the advantage, they were able to break through the opposing defence on only one occasion. Fisher started a promising movement by passing at the right time to M'Kay, who transferred to M'Dougall. The last-mentioned player sent a good pass to Mn.nro, who cut, in neatly and scored. 'Cudby's kick failed. The sub.iirban players still continued to force the issue, but Selwyn's defence was sufficient to hold them -in check until. the ■final whistle sounded, with the scores : Hutt 9, Selwyn 0.
