A BASKETBALL LEAGUE

NELSON, 22nd May. A meeting to form a Basket Ball League was held in the V.M.C.A. rooms on Monday evening, Mr. George Page pre siding. It was unanimously decided to form a league. It was decided that members be allowed to play in two teams, provided players register in one team only. The management committee will consist of four men and two lady delegates from the Ladies' League, three to lorn, a quorum. The general secretary stated that Mr. Duffy the Wellington physical director, was including two men's and one ladies' teams _iv the gymnastic combination thu_ was visiting Nelson on the King's Birthday and the day following, and that it had been arranged to give an exhibition game during the hockey tournament on the forenoon of 3rd June. If accepttable a representative game could probably be arranged to take place during the second night's performance of the gymnastic exhibition of the Wellington visitors. The idea was accepted, and it was decided to communicate with Mr. Duffy on the matter. Mr. J. Scott, the local physical director, was appointed sole selector. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated an enthusiastic meeting.

At a meeting of the male staff and day boys of the Technical School, it was unanimously decided to form a Technical School Basket Ball League. It was announced that three teams could .be formed to play in the lunch hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the V.M.C.A. gymnasium. Mr. Scott physical director of the V.M.C.A., ptomised to coach the teams. Matches will be played with the senior boys of the Central School.

At the sixty-third annual meeting of subscribers to the Nelson Building Society, held on Wednesday evening, Mr. S. Bolson, chairman of directors, presiding, the secretary (Mr. G. M. Rout) read the. annual report, which stated, inter alia : "A profit at the rate of 5 per cent, for the past year was declared, in which the borrowers and investors shared equally, and £1700 was added to reserve fund, which now stands at £9500. Loans current at 31st March, 1925, amounted to £178,727, as against £172,----049 at 31st March, 1924. It is worthy of note that with nearly 500 borrowers this society has only one borrower in arrear with his payments, and the amount in arrear is extremely small." The retiring directors, Messrs. Baigent,' Simpson, and Stringer, being the only ones nominated, were re-elected. Messrs. Catley and Milner were elected auditors. Tha chairman pointed out that the reserve fund had mostly been built up from profits made on money on deposit, and not from subscribers. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the secretary, the assistant secretary, and staff, and the auditors.

Miss Annie Neilson, of the City Council office staff, who is leaving to join her people in Wellington, was the recipient of a presentation from the office staff on Wednesday afternoon. The Town Clerk, Bir. Edwards, in making the presentation (a gold bangle), spoke in appreciative terms of the efficient, attentive, courteous, and prompt services rendered by Miss Neilson, who had been with them seven years. The Mayor (Mr. W. Lock) said he personally, as well as the staff, was very sorry the council was losing the services of so courteous a member of the office staff. Other speakers expressed similar sentiments.

Additions to the Nelson Jersey herd has just been made by the addition o£ three heifers recently purchased by Mr. J3. H. Wearing, of Richmond, at Mr. C. G. C. Dcrmer's Waipiko Jersey sale. The wharfinger at Mapua " (Mr. Blanche) forwarded to the Nelson Harbour Board on* Tuesday afternoon some interesting figures showing the quantity of fruit shipped from that port during recent years. It was mentioned that more fruit for export was shipped from Mapua than from either Nelson or Motueka, and more than any other port' in New Zealand, the total export fruit being one-tliird of the total export of the Dominion. In 1920, 6920 cases were shipped; and in 1925, 61,469—a quarter of the total export for that year. Only fruit from Moutere Hills district was handled. There was loaded in the Bay 11,124 cases, and at Wellington 50,359. The quantity shipped from the port for local consumption was 31,836 j making the grand total shipped 93,305 cases.
