INJURED BY EXPLOSION

HINDU MANGLED BY GELIGNITE,

(BI TELEOR.VPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

TE AWAMUTU, 21st May

A fearful accident occurred at Lake Farm, Ngaroto, this morning by which a Hindu drain builder, named Waryan Singh, aged about 40 years, was terribly mangled. It appears he was draining rough swampy country at the back of the estate, and had set a charge of gelignite. With his son, Waryan had retired for a couple of chains to allow the charge to explode, but as the explosion did not occur he went to investigate. The charge went off as the man was standing over it, and he received the full force in the face. His nose and right eye were shattered, and a terrible hole was made in his skull. The right arm was shattered above the elbow, and the right wrist broken badly. Dr. Hall and Constable Hooker hurried to the scene, but practically nothing could bo done except improvise a stretcher and bring the man to the nearest house. Singh is in a low state, and is .not expected to recover.
