TRIBUTE TO MEMORY

A tribute to the memory of the late Mr. Justice Cooper, who died at Eltham a, few days ago was paid by the Supreme Court Bench and the Law Society in Wellington this morning, at a gathering in the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), Mr. Justice MacGregor, and Mr. Justice Ostler were on the Bench. Sir John Findlay, K.C., Mr. A. Gray, K.C., Mr. R. P, Ward (Justice Department), and a large number of barristers were present. Sir Robert. Stout said this .was a sad occasion. Mr. Justice Cooper had been appointed to the Bench in 1901. No man had a higher ideal of his office. He was hard-working and careful. He always remained intensely interested in his profession. The late Judge had shed lustre on his profession. Mr. Gray, K.C., endorsed the remarks of the Chief Justice, and also extended sympathy to the relatives. He said the late Judge had. treated all litigants with fairness, and had exercised a care, trust, and ability that they would long remember.

HAMILTON, This Day. The funeral of the late Sir Theophilus Cooper was very largely attended. An eloquent tribute was paid to the work of the late Judge by Archdeacon Cowie. Members of the Hamilton Law Society assembled prior to the funeral, and expressions of regret at the passing of so eminent a. Judge was voiced by Mr. Young, S.M., and Mr. Watts, president of the Law Society.
