New songs are always looked upon as something one has to lake a risk with when they have not become the rage. To make them popular there are gramophones, bands, local artists, orchestras, etc. They are made into one-step, foxtrot, etc., and all the devices known to music-sellers are given effect to to ensure a sale, but although thousands of songs are written every year all over the world only a few livo or become popular. It is the hardest task in the world to write a song that will last a decade, just as hard as to write a grand opera that will last. Knowing these facts, one must sit down and marvel at the immense success that has attained the songs of Harry' Lauder. He has hardly ever written anything that the public did not like. No writer has ever achieved the success that Lauder has had with his songs. Sir Harry has the gift of imagination, hence his songs are character studies from real life. This will be made manifestly evident when Harry Lauder makes his appearance at the Grand Opera House on Monday, Ist June, for six nights and a matinee on Saturday, 6th, at 2.30. ' His new sones.will be mentioned in another issue. Meantime those intending to be present can book at The Bristol from next Thursday onwards for the season, oir Harry is under' the direction of E J. Carroll and J. C. Williamson,' Ltd
