PATHOLOGIST AND BACTERIOLOGIST

DR. P. P. LYNCH APPOINTED.

Mr. C, M. Luke, chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board, stated at a meeting of that body yesterday, that Mr. J. A. Hurley, bacteriologist, hadresigned. Mr. Hurley had rendered valuable service. The board was now for the first time making provision for the appointmont-of an officer who would carry out the duties of pathologist and bacteriologist. Applications had been ?^ ed for the Potion at a salary of £1000 per ifnnum. Mr. Luke explained that the laboratory had been under the dual control of the' Health Department and the Government. A department oE pathology had never been properly installed. In the- opinion of the medical superintendent and the medical staff, the. tune had arrived when the pathological work should be put on a proper basis At the request of tlio Government, the board had taken over tho control of (.he bacteriological laboratory as from the begin mug of the year. Although still Civil servants, the officers referred to would be under the control of the board.. Under the new arrangement, it was probable that some of the seuior officers would have to take up more responsible duties.. The board decided to appoint Dr P P- Lynch, M.D., B.Sc, F.C.S., to bo pathologist and bacteriologist. Dr. Lynch was formerly a student at Victoria College, Wellington, and after graduation acted as clinical pathologist to the University of Otago in the medical school laboratory. He took his M.D. degree in bacteriology. During 1.924 ho acted as Government analyst for Otngo and.Southland.
