NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL
APPOINTED TO AUSTRALIA
SIR JOHN BAIRD, M.P,

Mr. S. M. Bruce, the Federal Prime' Minister, has bean officially advised that the King has appointed the Right Hon. Sir John Lawrence Baird to succeed Lord Forster as Governor-General of the Commonwealth.
Sir John Baird was First Commissioner of Works in Mr. Baldwin's previous Ministry, after being Under-Sec-ret ary for the Home Office. . He entered Parliament in 1910 as • member for Rugby, and acted as Parliamentary private secretary to Mr. Bonar Law. He was formerly in the diplomatic service, and was an intelligence officer in the European War.

LONDON, 18th May. While most writers are surprised at Sir John Baird's appointment as Gov-ernor-General, all agree that the choice will prove most popular in Australia. Like Lord Forster, he is a keen yachtsman, and a member of the Royal Yacht Club. During his Parliamentary career and also during the war work on the intelligence staff (for which he received the D.5.0.) Sir John Baird has won the highest praise. His energy, enthusiasm, and soundness of opinions and policy are largely due to his varied experience in the diplomatic service.
