AMERICAN SQUADRON

TO TUG EDITOR. . Sir, —A short but interesting letter from Mr. Henry Jackson, late of Now York, appeared in your issue of the 13th instant. Your correspondent freely admits that the men of the American fleet have not tasted liquor for some years, yet he evidently wishes now (o tempt them to drink hy keeping the bars open while the ships are in port. 1 would ask Mr. Jackson which is the better course : To keep all bars closed, or to induce the young men (for ni3ivy are still in their teens) to drink, by giving them an altogether changed nuViroument from their home life? Another question Mr. Jackson might answer : If the British Fleet were visiting tl>o United States, would he recommend opening liquor bars so as not to "irisiilt" the British Navy ? Logic does not seem to be a strong point with, your correspondent.—l am, etc., NEW ZEALAND. 18th May.. .
