ENGLAND DEFEATS AUSTRALIA

(trarreß press association—coptiusht.)

ADELAIDE, 17th May. . The international Soccer match, England v. Australia, was played yesterday at the Thcbarton Oval. The weather was favourable, but the attendance was fair. England had control in the early stages of the game, the combination being perfect and their attack brilliant. *They led at half-time by 3to nil. In the second spell England's play became ragged and their defence sluggish, while the Australians played doggedly in defence. The colonial forwards were weak, but Norman, at centre-half,' held Whittaker well. The Australians secured a penalty goal near the end, and the final scores were: England 4, Australia 1. , Bat-tin obtained two goals and Whittaker and Elkes one each for England. Gardner shot Australia's lone goal. Prominent on the English side were Battin, Graham, and Charlton, and on the Australian side Norman, Mitchell, and Pilgrim.
