QUESTION OF SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

The term holidays for the schools were arranged to fit in with the visit of the American Fleet, the vacation being set down for the period from the 15th to the 19th August, inclusive. At last night's meeting of householders at the Newtown School attention was drawn to the fact that since the date of the holidays was decided upon the expected date of arrival of the fleet had been altered, and the ships would arrive some days before the commencement of the school holidays. In order that school work might not be interrupted, it was suggested that the date of the holidays might be advanced. The opinion was expressed by the Rev. A. N. Scoiter that the earlier arrival of the fleet would not affect school work, as it was likely that a few days would elapse after the arrival of the vessels in port before the school children would be making their visits. On the motion of Mr. H. J. Barley, it was decided to recommend to the Education Board that the term holidays be rearranged to coincide with the arrival of the fleet.
