A plea of guilty was entered by a young man named Bernard Brooks, when he was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car, and with assaulting Mani Morar, a Hiiidu. Sub-Inspector Hollis explained that, while driving along Jervois quay, early on Saturday evening, the defendant crashed into a Hindu's cart which was proceeding in the same direction as the motor-car. The defendant, who was found by Sergeant Armstrong to be intoxicated, had some words with the Hindu, and struck him. "A man of this class cannot be allowed to no scot-free with a fine," said his "Worship. "He will be sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labour." The defendant's driving license was cancelled, and he was deprived of obtaining another license for twelve months. On the assault charge, be was ordered lo my 10s, witness's expenses.
