CHESS

OPENING OF SEASON

When the current chess season was opened at Dustin's rooms on the 18th ultimo with a "territorial" match between players residing hi the northern half of Greater Wellington and those living in the southern half, some games were left outstanding, These have now heen accounted for, and after a most exsiting finish the match ended in a tie, each side scoring 35 points (a draw counting half a point to each side). The number taking part, viz., 140, is believed to be a record for New Zealand. It should not, however, long remain a record, seeing that 300 invitations were issued on this occasion to citizens who are known to be chess players. Amongst tnose present were some who have not been playing very long, and a few who have neglected the game for some years, and have thus allowed themselves to get "rusty." Nevertheless, there was an°almost entire absence of one-sided games this gratifying feature being largely due to the fact that the Pairing Committee had, in advance, grouped all the known players into three divisions—A, B a>id t—according to the estimated strength as disclosed by the match records of the various clubs. Owing, however, to lackof sufficient data, aaid to the fact that some of the provisional pairings had to be re-arranged at short notice to suit the convenience of players who had other engagements, the committee wishes t\A h ■ un?erst0 1 0'} «>at the score-sheet, which is given below, j s not ( 0 be regarded hs showing the contestants in then- order o t playing strength.
