MARIST v. SCOTTISH WANDERERS.

Marist and Scottish Wanderers met at Association Park, in the rain for the greater part o£ the game; in fact, so heavy was the downpour over a field not remarkable for its sheltered position that play during tho second spell was really hard work. There was a fair attendance of spectators when the game commenced, but there was a general move for home and fireside shortly after the change-round. Marist had the better of the play of the opening spell, but yet had no very marked advantage. Very shortly after 4,h0 commencement .Barton sent an easy one past Thompson, in goal for Wanderers, in place of Murray, who was unable to play owin<r to an injury to his hand. Within a few minutes Barton received from Fitzgerald, tricked Arbuthnot, and placed well to goal. Costello headed through neatly. 2-0. Wanderers settled down in several promising movements, halves and forwards working very well together, and pressed down upon the Marist goal. A penalty was ordered and Lothian sent through. By this time the rain had set in steadily, and the teams changed round for the second spell; without an interval. Marist registered their third goal shortly afterwards, following quick passing work between the wings,, a centre from the right and a mill in the goal mouth, Johns getting through from short range. 3-1. Wanderers got going again in fine style, considering the heavy ground and the sodden ball, but were unable to pass the Marist backs. They appeared to tire after this series of attacks, and "Marisfc went away. The attack was solidly sustained, but particularly good work was done by the Wanderers' backs, Main, on the left, robbing the Marist forwards on a dozen occasions. Costello sent in a hot shot, but Thompson turned out cleverly. Cudby, however, closing in, slammed the ball -past him to the net 4-1. Wanderers made a final effort just on time, and Cunningham brought the scores to Marist 4, Wanderers 2. Mr L. Gates, of H.M.S. Dunedin, carried the whistle.
