ORIGIN IN CHEVIOT DISTRICT

The record at the Wellington observatory, of the earthquakes registered on lJaursday night point to the origin being about 60 or 70 miles away from Wellington. Apparently the origin was m the Cheviot district, where there is the well-known Kaikoura' "fault."Other earthquakes have been recorded from there, notably that on sth. December, 1881, when the spire of the Christchurch Cathedral was slightly injured, and that on Ist September, 1880, when the upper portion of the spire of the Cathedral fell.

The earthquake record taken on Thursday .shows that there were two shocks, at 9.36 p.m. and 10.31 p.m. The first shows a definite tilt, that the ground was bending towards the south, while the second • showed a definite tilt to the north.
