VOTING POWERS IN RUGBY.
When the business of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union last evening had advanced to the point at which a motion relating to voting powers was to be brought forward the president (Mr. H. Frost) made a request that Wellington might be good enough not to press its motion. " Wellington may be perfectly honest in bringing this matter forward," he said. "But if they do not press the motion, it will give you • evidence that the Wellington Union . does not desire to take any advantage of the minor unions."
The motion was to the effect that the maximum of four votes for unions with 90 teams and over should be increased to five votes for unions with 120 teams and over, the other voting powers to remain as at present. Mr. .1. Prendeville: "You place the Wellington Union in a very' awkward position. I still feel it my duty, however, to formally move the motion. There is nothing behind it; nothing underhand." The proposal amounted to areinstatement of the maximum of five votes. «
Mr. Wilson said that his union would support the motion, although opposition to minor unions was far from its mind. Mr. J. M'Leod considered that it was reasonable that a union such as Wellington, with something like 160 teams, should only have the same voting power as a union such as Taranaki, with, say, about 90 teams.
After further discussion, the motion was |>ul, nnd 1m(. mi the voices.
