(BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

ELTHAM, This Day. Last evening a serious tragedy occurred at a shallow cutting on the new Opunake railway line, opened last week, when Frank Forman, aged 50, a guard on the workers' train, was killed and four workers injured. Guard Forman, as was his usual procedure, was standing up in an open truck, with the workmen seated. He_ was pinned under the wheels, and "when dug out succumbed to severe injuries.

The workmen were thrown out, but their injuries were not severe. The injured men were: W. H. Green, injuries to head; J. Martyn, injuries to head and limbs; C. Long, injuries to ankle; P. Sexton, injuries to fingers.
