(OSITM MESS ASSOCIATION.—COMMGIT.)

(REUTERS TELEGRAM.)

(Received 19th March, 9.30 a.m.)

LONDON, 18th March.

In the House of Commons, Sir N. Grattan Doyle (C.) moved that the House is of opinion that it is undesirable to continue the unrestricted importation of foreign manufactures made under sweated conditions which are detrimental to the interests of British workmen and a contributory factor in unemployment. He referred to the rumour of a syndicate starting in Glasgow for the purpose of importing Germarf coal at a cheaper rate than it could be produced in Britain.

Mr. H. Dalton (Lab.) moved an amendment declaring that the interests' of British workmen cannot he helped by tariff. The causes and consequences of sweating at home and abroad were indivisible, and should be dealt with as a whole. He declared himself in favour of the development of international labour conventions all over the world.

Major H. E. Crawford (L.) described the resolution as naked Protectionist propaganda. He declared that the Liberals were prepared to join any action on the lines of the Washington Convention, particularly through 'the League of Nations.

The amendment was defeated by 240 votes to 137. The resolution was talked out. •
