SERVICES ROUND THE BAY

MEETING SUGGESTS FURTHER

CONSIDERATION

This evening a big deputation of residents of Oriental Bay. and Roseneath is to wait upon the City Council upon the questions of the surfacing of Oriental Bay Parade to its full width and the transport services for the bay in future. A preliminary meeting of those interested was held last evening, Mr. J. J M'Grath. being voted to the chair, and the issues were discussed from variouspoints of view, the dust nuisance arising from the present very unsatisfactory state of the road coming in for a deal of hard comment.

Another point made was that the relaying of the car lines would result in setting.up.jnore lines of traffic, and that a bus service might be extended to the Uarlton Gore road and Maida Vale and perhaps also to the Hataitai end of the district.

Doubts were expressed by certain speakers as to whether the proposed bus service would be an improvement particularly; if they. would ■ entail- changing of cars at Courtenay place, and also," if buses were to run.to the city, in that they would probably not follow, the shopping streets. Finally..-it, was "resolved onthe motion of Mr. G. G. Watson: That a deputation wait on the City Council urging the immediate abolition of the dust-nuisance "by ■ sealing the ■whole surface of the road, and protesting against, the proposal to . spend a large sum „of, money., on .relaying the tram line in the •meantime," 'until there has been- an ■ opportunity for adequate investigation of the. possibility of substituting some .more efficient system of transport."

Councillor C. H. Chapman expressed the opinion that the bitumen surfacing of the Parade should be completed to the full width at one time, and he thought that if the deputation restricted itself to that demand it would be sueThl: .bu?..service might cost ±-30,000, and it was just a question, whether the, Oriental Bay section would pay as a bus' route.

The deputation is to lie introduced by Councillor T. Forsyth. Mr.'M'Grath will be the . spokesman.

■ io ibb'editojl' -■"' Sir,—With reference to your reporter's article in last evening's issue of "The Post," giving the views of a resident of Unental Bay on the question of renewing the tram tracks there, 1 I wonder what authority the .resident has for statin?* five out of six residents of the Bay are more interested in a bus service," ; etc I suppose he 'means five or six of his friends. ■ -. ■>

,, T To,. m, ake use of his own expression, 1 think I can safely say," this gentleman owns one of the five houses on the parade, and no doubt has his own car so that all that he is actually concerned about is the beautifying of his own and his five or six friends' doorsteps, and not the need of the common or garden citizens who have-to ride in public conveyances. -. •*

What would be the use of a. trackless car round the. Bay for the ordinary user? Just imagine having to climb out ol the trackless car at Gourtenav place ma southerly buster and try and get a seat in the already fully-taxed Lainttonbound tramcars. On the face of it the whole thing is absurd. " Personally, I do not use the cars a great deal, but I know plenty of residents who will certainly not support this aosurd deputation to the council. * are Plenty of other urgent needs for ( the district for them to "deputationlse about. Let them remember the tramways department at least is financial, and is no burden on the ratepayers, and without wishing to appear too much like the gentleman who concluded by saying: "I have spoken," roy advice to them is to 'let well alone."—l am,'etc 19th March.
