NELSON NEWS

i ' ■ (FKOU OCR OWili 'CORRESPONDENT.) | NELSON,. 15th January. On Tuesday evening a civic reception was accorded to the Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs. There was a large attendance. Among those present were Messrs. H. Atmore and R. P. Hudson, M.P.'s, and the Hon. W^ W. Snodgrass, M.L.C. The Mayor (Mr. W. Lock) extended a hearty welcome to the Minister. Most districts complained that they did not get a fair deal in regard to public expenditure. In some quarters it wasj said that the North Island was receiving more than 'its share of public expenditure. He did' not know whether^ there was any truth in this statement., It did, however, really seem that Nelson had not fared so well as some other'places in regard to the expenditure of Government money. The Government buildings required repairs and painting, and the' railway station was a disgrace. In fact, it was the worst thing doing duty as a railway station in the Dominion or any place the size of Nelson.

Mr. W J. Moffatt (president of the Progress League) also ■welcomed the' Minister, and brought under his notice the matter of the expenditure of the Government grant on the Go wan road to Lake Boturoa. Many complaints were .made that the Government had not expended a grant made two years ago-. An agreement, had been made, he understood, between the Government 3 nd the proprietor of the accommodationhouse recently erected at the Lake that this grant would be expended when certain accommodation had been provided A, great deal more accommodation than that stipulated had been provided, but the road was in such a deplorable condition that those who had.recently visited the; locality said that they would not. again travel over it wMri A^ more ' M-P -' and the Hon. W. W. ■ bnodgrass, also welcomed the Minister. :.-•■■ _ln replying,-Mr.' Bollard expressed thanks for the welcome -given him, He had always been anxious to visit Nelson, and he would come back again as soon as he could. The Minister said the Dominion was in a very prosperous state just now, but they m,ust be careful ; not to spend their surplus money, as was done during the war. Steady progress was required, and if prices were steady;the.people wouia be better off. louchmg on the question of the Control Board for produce; he believed the right thing had 'been done by the Government, which had done the best it could to assist farmers in this.way during the war. , . . ■■■..:....

Two horses attached to a lorry owned by Cookseyand Co., driven by Mr J. Nesbitt, bolted, in Halifax street on Tuesday afternoon; the driver losing control as the result of a package on which he was sitting falling off. The horses dashed into the side entrance of the Post Office and carried away part of the fence... Continuing, alridg the footpath to the corner; one horse got each side of an electric-light pole,-.'and the impact freed them. The pole. was: split. The shafts' of the lorry were /broken, but the horses, which, were stopped be^ fore going far, were, uninjured. ' An exhibition of gladioli Wanged by the Nelson Horticultural ■ Society, and held _at the V.M.C.A. Hall on Tuesday evening, was very successful. A large number of growers staged blooms. Many varieties \of fine colouring were shown; This was the second display arranged by the society, and the increased number of exhibits .indicated' .tjae. popularity, of the exhi Wtion. .; D.ahlias,, sweet-.peas,: and zinnias were also shown.: The attendance of the public and members of the.society, was■,large." . .
