TRENTHAM NOTES

By " Vedette."

Although the tracks had dried up considerably, they., were still heavy at Trentham this . morning. The weather was fine but cold, and there was a fair number of onlookers. The extreme outside of the trial grass and the tan tracks were available. Haze and Kaladare were the first to work, running four furlongs in 53sec, the last three taking -42sec. Nigger Minstrel, hitting out freely, sprinted half a mile in 50Asec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. It is stated that he is an unlikely starter at Trentham, and that H. Gray will ride him in the Derby at Eiccarton.. ■ . S. Waddell's team were out, but were not asked to go fast. Gold Light strode out well in a working gallop on the trial grass. She is in great order. Master Sandstone and Piquant were together at the end of five furlongs, run in lmin Bsec, the first two furlongs taking 27sec. It was a useful gallop, and should benefit Piquant considerably. Crishna was allotted a working gal-, lop- once round on the grass. Merit cantered round to the straight entrance, and then sprinted home. Ecuador, Wench, and Aeriform were sent to gallop six furlongs. Ecuador was left six or seven lengths, but was going better than the other pair, and m front of them at the finish. The first furlong was run in- 14sec, two furlongs in 27sec, and the full' distance in lmin 22 2-ssec. Ryan), Comical, and Diamond King bro.ke. away at the tenfurlong post. Musketoon was slow to begin, and at the end of a furlong he was at least eight lengths behind Comical, who was a length behind Diamond ■Ring. Musketoon had joined the others with three furlongs to go, and at the finish he was holding Diamond Ring, with Comical beaten off. Musketoon appeared to carry a good deal more weight than Comical, while Diamond Ring had -a very light boy up. The first two furlongs occupied 28sec, three in 41 2-Ssec, tour in 55sec, five in lmin lOsec, and | the full distance in 2min 21 3-ssec. The first five were run in lminllsec. , Motley and The Thorn, who arrived yesterday, did half-pace work. Both are in good order, Motley bearing an infinitely improved appearance since last seen. The Thorn has grown into a massive colt, and has every appearance of ability to gallop fast. Both will be ridden by D. Watts on Saturday. Suggestion and Subjection were practically on terms at the end of seven furlongs, run in lmin 38sec. The first three furlongs occupied 40sec, four in 54 3-ssec, and six in. lmin 25secRoyal Divorce was cantered down the back on the course proper, and sprinted from the six-furlong barrier on the straight course.
