A COMMON DANGER
MR. ASQUITH'S STATEMENT
REJOINDER BY MR. SNOWDEN,
LONDON, 22nd October. With only a clear week to polling flay, all parties are working their hardest. Colonel Jackson, chairman of the Conservative organisation, after a tour of the constituencies, expresses the opinion that the Conservative Party will he returned with an increase in strength. He says: "I do not think the Liberals will vote Socialist, but there may be abstentions. .The' Liberals, in a straight fight, can "depend on the Conservative vote more than the' Conservatives can depend on the Liberal vote. The experience of Conservative candidates is that the country is deeply interested iri the_ question, of Empire development, which is an effective counter-blast to the internationalism of the ,Socialist Party." Prominence has been given to a statement by; Mx., Asguitb.^ at 'Paisley,,
in which he - said : "Both the old political parties believe they are confronted at this' election by a common danger, whien,^ without loss of identity or compromise of principle, they are making reciprocal efforts to avert. For my own part I see nothing in such a procedure which violates in any way the most rigorous code of pubhc honour and political consistency." The "Baily Telegraph" comments that LiEerals and Unionists alike welcome this declaration, which it is held should clear.up any doubts which the Liberals may have entertained regarding iheir. duty in the present election, Mr. P. Snowden, speaking in Colne Valley, and commenting on Mr. Asquith's. statement, asked how long had Labour been a common enemy. How long was it sines they were teld that the Liberal and Labour Parties were agreed upon nine-tenths of the Labour programme?
