HAWKES BAY J.C. SPRING

GOOD WEATHER AND RACING

GUINEAS WON BY AN OUTSIDER.

(BI TELEGRAPH.) (From ".Vedette.")

HASTINGS, Ist October.

The Hawkes Bay J.C. Spring Meeting was opened in good weather. The track, though rough in places, provided fail' galloping ground. The racing throughout the day was interesting, and close finishes were the general order. There was a good attendance of the public, and betting was spirited.

HURDLES TO CROWN COIN,

Toa Taua opened and closed a solid favourite for the Tomoana Hurdles, with Merry Bells next best backed, and fairly good support for Woden and Crown Coin. The' field raced together to the first fence, and at the stand Woden had charge from Toa Taua, Soliel'd'Or, and Crown Coin. Toa Taua took charge five furlongs from home, where Crown Coin displaced Woden and Merry Bells commenced to move up. Racing round the turn and into the straight Toa Taua and Crown Coin were on terms in front well clear of Merry Bells, with Soliel dOr and Woden following. Toa Taua led Crown Coin slit , at the last fence, but in the run to ihe post Crown Coin won, hard held, by two lengths from Toa Taua, who was under pressure. Merry Bells was four • lengths away third, well clear of Soliel dOr and .Woden.

THE TRIAL STAKES.

Tutankhamen was a little more than even-money favourite fdr the Trial Stakes, with The Strand, Seleuite, aiid Martona next best backed. Epistle and Polyastra were troublesome at the start, and finally were left. Tutankhamen was first out from Zaza, Hiwinui, Miss Gazeley, and Martona.. Zaza ran wide at the turn and lost his place, while Martona moved_ up on the rails. . Tutankhamen was given a reminder a hundred yards from the post, and he strode away to win by three lengths. Martona finished well in second place, three-quarters of a length in front of Hiwinui, with Damon, Zaza, The Strand, and Miss Gazeley next.

THE HAWKES BAY GUINEAS.

Lady Rewa was an even-money favourite for the Hawkai Bay Guineas, with Subjection solidly backed; then, after a big drop, coming Lady Joyce. Tho six candidates stripped fairly well, and apart from Subjection did not look a particularly classy lot. Mount Marta, the winner, is a good, solid three-year-old, and that is all. There was some scrimmaging at the start, in which Coot and Lady Rewa suffered arid Mount Marta profited. Royal Diadem led down the back from Lady Joyce, Mount Marta, Coot, and Subjection. The k\st named was whipper-in with half the journey gone, where Royal Diadem was in front, with Mount Marta next, and Lady Joyce and Lady Rewa handy. Mount Marta was first into the straight from Royal Diadem, with Lady Joyce and Lady Rewa moving up, and Subjection attempting to come tlirough on the rails. Lady Joyce ranged up with Mount Marta when in line for home, and tho pair fought out a desperate finish, Mount Marta scoring by a neck. Subjection, who camo with a late run, was a head away third, with Lady Rewa four lengths away, well clear of Royal Diadem and Coot.

A GREAT FINISH.

The Spring Handicap was a great betting race, Merry Singer, Festivity, Tanadees, Diamond Ring, and Bumptious all being well backed in*that order, with only 180 tickets dividing the lot. From a good start Crown Gem led Tanadees, Bumptious, Diamond Ring, Kalakaua, and Merry Singer, with Festivity last. The order was much the same to the top turn, where Festivity began to close up. Crown Gem was done with half a mile from homo, where Tanadees and Merry Singer were in charge from Festivity, Diamond Ring, Kalakaua, and Crown Gem. Merry Singer and Tanadees just led Festivity at the turn, with Kalakaua showing up. In a great raco to the post Merry Singer and Tanadees were joined hy Festivity and later by Kalakaua, and in a punishing finish heads only separated Tanadees, Merry Singer, Festivity, and KalakaUa, in that order. Diamond Ring and Bumptious were next.

THE NURSERY HANDICAP.

The bracket, Tiega and Runnymede, was slightly better backed in the Nursery Handicap than The Shirley and Taradiddilo bracket; then, after a big drop, coming the Kemball trio, Hymestrason, Standard, and Race Day. From an indifferent start Hymestrason, Standard, and Race Day were the first out, while Runnymede and Rouno were slow to move. Racing to the straight Hymestrason, Standard, and Taradiddle led Shirley, Tiega, and Race Day. Standard and Taradiddle wero first into the straight, but Shirley, who came through oil the rails, went away to win very easily by three lengths from Standard. There was a good tussle for second place, Taradiddle being only half a length behind Standard, with Tiega a similar distance away fourth, and Kaiti close next, followed by Hymestrason.

A CONSISTENT GELDING.

Comical wound up favourite for the Glenaray Handicap, with Gaze and Master Black also well supported, then coming Watchman and Kilceit. Kilceit was first out from Blissfulriess and KillooU, but racing down the back Watchman and Comical improved their positions. The order round the top turn was BlissFulness, Watchman, Master Black, Kilceit, and Comical, with Gaze moving up. Blissfulnoss was still in front at tho turn, with Kilceit and Master Black next and Comical handy, aud Gaze closing up. In a good race to lho post Gaze just got. up to win by a i long neck from Kilcoil. who was a similar dis" tancc in front of Master Black ; Watchman, Comical, Theic, and Blissfulness were next.

THE HACKS.

Bonnie Gold was favourite for tint Flaxmere Handicap, but there was good support few Bwuet Heattinr, Purisoproud, mi Head iJejf. Stymie., th« Mianer,

was not well backed and returned a good two-figure dividend. Stymie began smartly and was followed round the top turn by Martona, White Ensign, Minstrel Boy, and Purseproud. Stymie led Martona, Minstrel Boy, and Road Hog into the straight, and Stymie and Martona fought out a good finish, the former winning by a head. White Ensign warthree lengths away third, then coming Road Hog, Kilmint, and Sweet Heathers

THE FLYING HANDICAP.

Wassail was a little more than even money favourite for the Flying Handicap, with First Salute a good-priced second favourite. Wassail and Civilform dwelt slightly at the start, but they were soon up close to the pacemaker, Master Beckwith, with First Salute and Avonlea well back. There was little change to the turn, where the field closed up. Master Beckwith was done with at the distance, and Wassail also retired. First Salute came through, and he defeated the fast-finishing Avonlea by a little over a length. Civilform was four lengths away, third, and Wassail a bad fourth.

The sum of £19,591 was invested on the tot-alisator, compared with £17,955 last year, an increase of £1616. i
