CARTERTON, This Day.

At the annual meeting of the Martinborough Rifle Club, the annual report recorded that during the season teams visited Featherston and' Greytown, and a team competed in the M'Leod Shield, which was won by Featherston. Several members also competed at the Rifle Association Meeting at Papawai and at Hastings, and were successful in getting well into the prize list. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr. 8,. M'Lebd; deputy president, Mr. W. Colman; secretary, Mr. W. M'Kay; treasurer, Mr. A. J. fright. It was decided to use single targets this season. The president presented the championship cup to Mr. Jack M'Dougall, and the Handicap Cup to Mr. W. M'Kay. Messrs. R, M'Leod, W. Colman, J. A. M'Dougall, and R. W. M'Laren announced their intention of giving medals and trophies for competition during the coming season. The generous gift of a section of land for a Plunket room in Martinborough has been made to ths Plunket Society fciy Mr. George Pain. The vital statistics _ for Carterton for September were:—Births 9, marriages 2, deaths, 7. For the quarter: Births 29, deaths 12, marriages 7. At a meeting of the Carrington Dairy Company at Carterton yesterday, it was decided to support the proposal to establish a butter factory in the Carterton district.

MASTERTON, This Day. At a special meeting of the Masteljfcon Borough Council the reorganisation of the works department was completed. It was decided to accept the resignation o! the borough engineer (Mr. Dodge) as from the end of September; to appoint Mr. Mabson to bo acting-engineer at a salary of £350, plus £25 motor-cycle allowance; Mr. B. Braggins, present foreman, to be appointed borough overseer at a salary of £312, with £25 motorcycle allowance. It was stated that by this reorganisation there would be a saving of £462 per annum, as compared with the previous administration. Mr. W. A. M'Gregor, health inspector at Greytown, has been transferred to Masterton.

Mr. J. A. Young, of the Masterton branch of the Hume Pipe Co., has received notice of his transfer to the Auckland branch, where he will be manager of the Penrose works.

The senior championship of the Masterton Miniature Rißo Club has been won by Mr. P. M. Velvin, with a score of 591. The junior championship resulted in a tie between It :rs. J. Wales and D. Elmsley (565),-"who will shoot off next week.

The vital statistics of Masterton for September -were: Births 34, marriages 6, deaths 11. The totals for the past quarter were: Births 71, marriages 19. deaths 29. r

During last month the Masterton Borough Council registered ten cars, two cycles, and five trucks. The Masterton County Council registered 25 cars, five cycles, and four trucks. Of the 35 cars registered, 29 were of American manufacture. During the quarter ended 30th September, the Borough Council registered 52 cars, 16 cycles, and 12 trucks, and the County Council 57 cars, 17 cycles, and four trucks.

Last month 21 building permits to the value of £17,018 were issued by the Masterton Borough Council, making a total of 46 permits, to the value of £26,872, for the past quarter.
