OBITUARY

A NOTED TRAVELLER AND

JOURNALIST.

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 29th September. The death is announced of Julius Mendes Price, war correspondent and explorer.

Julius I'rice, F.R.G.S., artist, author, and war correspond »ii, was born in London. He was special war artist-corre-spondent of the " Illustrated London News '' during the Bechuanaland and South African campaigns in 1884-85, on which occasion he enlisted for journalistic purposes as a trooper in Methuen's Horse, and served with the regiment until it was disbanded. In 1890-91, for the same journal, he accompanied the exploration expedition to open up the Nordenskiold route to. the interior of Siberia, vjo, the Kara Sea, the Arctic ooast of Siberia, and up the Yenesei River, and afterwards unaccompanied traversing Siberia, Mongolia, the Gobi Desort, and Northern China to Pekin. He accompanied an expedition to the West Australian goldfields in 1895. On the outbreak of the Graeco-Turkish War in 1897 he accompanied the Greek Army during its campaigns. In 1898 he went with an expedition to the Northwest Territory of Canada, travelling down the Yukon River to Klondike. He was with the Russian Army in Manchuria during the Russo-Jap War in 1904-05, acting on that occasion for the "Illustrated London News" and the

" Daily Telegraph." During the Great War he spent tho early months on the French front, but. later wont with the Italinn Army. He has published a large number of volumes covering his adventures in the world's byways, and has also contributed innumerable magazine articles illustrated with his own sketches. He has also been a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. For his wo.rk on the Italian front ho viiß created a Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
