Tlie late Hugh Chisholm, who was 58 years of age, is best known as editor of the 10th, Uth, and 12th editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. From 1897 to 190.0 he was editor .of the "St. James's Gazette," and then became leader-writer for the "Standard," and later for "The Times." He was co-editor, with Sir D. M. Wallace and President Hadley (of Yale), of the supplementary volumes which made the 10th edition of the Encyclopaedia, in 1900-03. He was editor-in-chief of the 11th edition (1911) and of the three new volumes which, with the 11th, mado up the 12th edition (1922). From 1913 to 1916 he was a director of The Times Publishing Co., and was financial editor of "The Times" from 1913 to 1920.
