THE PREPARATION OF SOILS.

Mr. T. Waugh, the. \v«ll-known horticultural expert, recently delivered an address at the Parish Hall, Khandal, an to the members of the Onslow Horticultural Society and their friends. Tho c-cturer dealt first with the "Preparation of Soils," and stressed the importance of providing adequate drainage Ha explained how this could be easily and cheaply provided. A' well-drained' «oiL was shown to be essential to the successful cultivation of flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables; it was hopeless to expect good results from waterlogged and sour land. "Pulverisation or breaking • up of the soil." said the ;lecturer, "is the next most important matter." ■Ha explained to those present "how-.tlia maximum amount of air, rain, and frost can be utilised for the benefit of planfc life. The lecturer then proceeded to deal with the "Cultivation of Daffodils nnd_ Narcissi." He exhibited a fine collection of leading varieties, and lucidly explained the classification. He advised, the members to be sparing in the usa of manures, and explained' that the great secret of success with these popular flowers was the correct and thorough preparation of the soil prior to planting the bulbs. A large number of questions wera answered, and at the conclusion of the lecture Mr. Waugh was heartily thanked 011 behalf of the members by Messrs, JN. A. Grant and F. J. Brooker
