ROWING

OPENING OF SEASON "WELLINGTON WIN REDDING . . SHIELD. .In. spite of a steady drizzling rain there was ■ a large attendance of the ■public at the rowing clubs' sheds on . Saturday^ afternoon, when the 1924-25 rowing season was opened by His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord. ■Jellicoe. ' In aeking His' Excellenoy to perform the opening ceremony, Sir Francis Bell, president of the Wellington Amateur Rowing Association, regretted that it would be the last occasion on which His Excellency would open the season. "You have taken so much interest in the boating clubs of New Zealand that we shall all regard our severance from you with regret," he said, "but we may still hope that chance may give us in later days the opportunity of seeing •you on this platform again."

"I think it is very fortunate that it I '■; is the last occasion on which I will be asked to declare the rowing season • open,?>, replied Lord Jellicoe, "because on each occasion I have opened the season I have always brought with me that _.. eort of weather which is not very conducive to the sport. Much as I regret it is the last occasion, I don't think the members of the. rowing clubs have any reason to regard it with regret." .■■..His Excellency then declared the sea- . son open, and wished the sport every success. A programme of races, over a short ' course of about 400 yards, to decide the winners of the Bedding Shield, which is competed for each opening day, was held. ■ •■ Results of the racing are :— Open Fours.—Petone R.C.
