Viscount Long, who was bom in 1854, entered the Houso' of Commons in 1880 as .Conservative, member for North Wiltshire, imcl sat in every Parliament Kinco till he was created a peer in 1921. though he changed his constituency several ■ times. In 1805 he became "President of the Board of Agriculture, a position he occupied for five years, and in 1905 succeeded Mr. Wyndlmm as Chief Secretary for Ireland. When Mr. Balfour Tesigned the leadership of the Unionist Party in 1011 he was the'candidate for. the more conservative branch of the party, but both he and Mr. Auaten Chamberlain, his rival, agreed to stand aside in favour of Mr. Bonar Law With other Unionist leaders, Mr. Lon"' as lie was then, .joined the first Coalition Ministry in 1915, taking the post of President of the Local Government Board. In the second Coalition Ministry he was Secretary of State for Hie Colonies. - Whtfti Mr. Lloyd George reconstructed his Ministry in 1919, Mi\ Long- became First Lord of the Admiralty, and had the task of supervising the reduction to a peace basis of the great Navy, which had been built up during the war. For some years his health lias bcefi unsatisfactory, and ho resigned oflico in 1021. A few months later ho was raised to the House of Lords.
