ILLEGAL ACTION

MASTERTON, 26th September. In tho Supreme Court the Mayor, Mr. O. Pragnell, and eleven councillors and ex-councillors, of the Masterton Borough Council, were each fined £5 for illegally transferring moneys from a special loan account, which was in credit, to the general account, which was in debit, in order to save overdraft interest. The Judge agreed that tho councillors had acted in what they considered to bo tho interests of the ratepayers, but tho act was illegal unless authorised by Order-in-Council. The prosecution was brought by the Audit Department.
