Slater, one of the bestknown men in the timber industry at Auckland, died • at" Brighton, ■■ in EngI land, on Saturday,: aged 56 years. During the past 17 years he was manager' |to the Kauri Timber Company. Mr. j Slater's early years were spent in London,: but as a youth he came to New Zealand. He was a contractor before4 associating himself with the timber trade. Last March Mr. Slater was granted leave of- absence, and,- accom- , panied by Mrs. Slater and their two daughters, went to England.

Mr. F. W. Baxter, son of, Mrs. W. E. Baxter, of Auckland,'has been appointed assistant professor of English at M'Gil I University, .Montreal, Canada. 'Mr. Baxter was educated at the Auckland Grammar School ands Auckland University College, and after war service attended Oxford-University, where he was Shakespeare scholar of liia year, graduating with first-class honours in English.. Mr. Baxter is at present a member of the English staff of the University of London. He will take up his now appointment vpn 18th September. Dr. J. S. Elliott, president of the Wellington College Old Boys' Association, is leaving with Mrs. Elliott on Tuesday next for a trip to America. A representative gathering of old boys presided over by Mr. W.. 15.. Bethune, who has been appointed deputy-presi-dent during Dr. Elliott's absence, met last evening to wish him bon voyage and a safe return. Complimentary remarks were made by Mr.; Betluine, Mr. J. V. Firth, former principal, and Mr. T. R. Cresswell, the present principal of the college, regarding the good work done by Dr: Elliott, both for the old school and: the' Old Boys', Association, and a presentation was made him as a token of esteem from -his fellow old boys.. •

Mr. Christopher Leek, ex-Mayor of ■•Newmarket, ' Auckland, died at his residence at Remuera, on Tuesday, aged 70 years. Mr. Leek was born1 in Herefordshire. In-1884 heT arrived at Auckland and entered the Government railways service.' ," He was stationed at Mercer, and there, with a small group ■of railwayman, took an active part in organising the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. Mr. Leek took up public life and was for 20 years connected with the .Newmarket Borough' Council, serving as Mayor from 1917 to 1921.
