TO-DAY'S RESULTS.

The last of the competitions proper are being judged this afternoon and evening. The finals of; 'the contralto solo, "Lovely Spring," the mezzo English song, the bass English:. song and the S.A.T.B. quartette are to be judged .this evening. A notable blasting operation was carried^ out at the stone quarry on the Waikato river bank near Tuakau by Mr W. A. Need, contractor, on Wednesday' •^ n J tI lr66' tons of gelignite were- oxpldded to obtain metal for various roadlng contracts; These contracts include the .supply :of 50,000 cubic yards of metal for the Tuakau Borough Council and supplies to .the.Public Works Department works on the Eangiriri deviation ; and : the Baglan ; and Franklin county councils and Hamilton. Preparation for the blast (states "The Post's" Auckland correspondent) had been in progress, for some time, a long shaft having been driven into the mass of rock. Two cross tunjrols wore bored at right angles to the .main shaft, and at tho ondsof these explosives -vvero laid The.main tunnel- was 75 feet in length' and the length from the gelignite t6*tho mouth■' of the tunnel was filled with concrete. Tlie shot was; fired electrically'from the Tuakau bank of the river. There was practically no nois& but the ground was shaken as if by an earthquake for a distance of more than half a..mile around. The whole hillside appeared to lean outwards, hover, as if in indecision, and then fall with, a terrific crash.
